Sincethe18thcentury，manyRomanCatholicshaveobservedMay–andMayDay–withvariousMaydevotionstotheBlessedVirginMary.Inworksofart，schoolskits，andsoforth，Mary＇sheadwilloftenbeadornedwithflowersinaMaycrowning.May1isalsooneoftwofeastdaysoftheCatholicpatronsaintofworkersStJosephtheWorker，acarpenter，husbandtoMotherMary，andsurrogatefatherofJesus.ReplacinganotherfeasttoSt.Joseph，thisdatewaschosenbyPopePiusXIIin1955asacounterpointtothecommunistInternationalWorkersDaycelebrationsonMayDay.
